Want to Live Longer? Have One of These! (New RESEARCH!)

This video will be a change of pace from the recent ex-vegan and carnivore topics I’ve been covering. It focuses on something ALL of you, whether vegan, omnivore, carnivore, or whatever you may be, can put to use in your lives to a positive benefit.

According to the website BrainyQuote, Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale has been quoted as saying, “a happy wife is a happy life.”

And some brand-spankin’ new research published in the journal Psychological Science, indeed, supports that very sentiment!

Researcher Olga Stavrova used data from 4,372 couples over the age of 50, who were part of the US Health and Retirement Study. The couples were followed for 8 years. Their life satisfaction was measured using the established ‘Satisfaction With Life Scale’ designed by American psychologist Edward Diener, and their vital statistics were also tracked, including any deaths that occurred within study duration.

Partner support and reliability were rated, and so were physical activity levels. Furthermore, Ogla controlled all data for health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, cancer, lung disease, coronary heart disease, stroke, arthritis, incontinence, and psychiatric problems. She also controlled for gender, age, ethnicity, education level, and household income.

What Olga found was that the happier the PARTNERS of the study participants were, the less likely the PARTICIPANTS were to die.

And that positive effect was strong, even when a given participant was unhappy; you see, so long as their partner was happy, unhappy participants still experienced a decreased risk of death… despite being unhappy themselves.

In any case, Olga wrote that she would like to see more research along these lines exploring larger social networks, not just married couples.

But, for now, the take away is that not only is marriage to a happier person more likely to last according to earlier research, but having a happier spouse is positively associated with longer life according to this paper.

However, for whatever reason or reasons, this positive effect was not witnessed in homosexual pairings. In fact, being part of a “same-sex couple” positively predicted mortality!

Not sure what to say about that, just sharing the data.

Anyway, leave your thoughts and comments below.
