Re: Vegan Gains “No More Squats”

Richard, aka Vegan Gains, recently made a video where he discussed how he dislocated a knee during Squats. Not on his lightest warm-up sets, as he described, but on his third set with 45s.

Now, I’ve linked that video in the description below, so that you can go and watch it if you haven’t seen it already, and he’ll explain the events in greater detail, as well as his concerns and options.

This video is meant to be a quick, informative response to Richard’s concerns and plans. One that I felt not only could benefit Richard, or give him something to consider, but also one that others may find informative who may be in a similar situation — or at risk for one.

Just keep in mind, I am NOT a medical doctor, NOR am I a certified physical therapist. The information and advice I am presenting in this video are purely suggestions, born of my own experiences, observations, and research that you could BRING UP with someone qualified.

With that out of the way, let me cut to the chase this video.

I personally feel that Richard should pursue surgery, because he claims that surgery worked well for his other knee, and he enjoys lifting.

His concern is that he might suffer from a post-operation E. Coli infection, as he did last time, but infections like that are indeed VERY rare.

According to Johns Hopkins, the chances of developing a surgical site infection are about 1% to 3%.

And according to one large study published in the American Journal of Infection Control, the rate of E. Coli infection specifically is 15.3% compared to other forms of surgical site infections such as Staph infections.

That would be 15.3% out of the 1 to 3% rate of total surgical site infections. Not 15.3% stand-alone.

And another, more recent study published in the journal Surgery Research and Practice found that rate to be only 11.1%.

So, while I can understand Richard’s apprehension, which makes sense given a significant past trauma, this data helps provide perspective.

Richard mentioned he may also just train lighter when it comes to lower-body.

Now, I am not qualified to comment on whether that’s a good idea or not given his injury, but what I will say is, lighter reps, such as the 25-35 range, have been found to build significant muscle like moderate reps in the 8-12 range. The only difference being that the comparatively heavier rep range is better for building strength.

So, while you may not be setting Squat PRs using higher reps, you should still be able to build muscle.

So you won’t end up looking like Johnny Bravo.

But, I emphasize, training your legs in any rep range, given your injury, is at your owk risk. Even lightly.

I honestly feel Richard should go the route of surgery. Perhaps even use a different hospital than last time, if that helps him feel any less anxious.

That way he can heal up, and get back to making those FULL-BODY vegan gains!
